Fragments of Home

This work emerges from a lifelong meditation on the meaning of home. In sixty years, I have lived in over forty different houses—each move etching a quiet mark on my sense of place, belonging, and self. These tiny art pieces, made with felt, fabric scraps, and Sashiko thread, are intimate attempts to stitch together what was once fragmented, overlooked, or lost.

The scale is small on purpose—each piece a tender offering, like a whisper, a memory you keep in your pocket or on a wall in a small corner of private space. I am drawn to the softness and imperfection of handwork. Felt and thread give me language where words fail. Sashiko, a Japanese mending stitch, is traditionally used to repair and reinforce cloth. For me, it becomes a metaphor for emotional repair: slow, repetitive, quiet, enduring.

This work evokes both angst and comfort—the ache of rootlessness and the possibility that home might live not in a place but in gesture, texture, and care. Through these small acts of making, I am asking: What does home feel like when you stop trying to pin it down?
