i once was a little girl

I was born in the United States in Wisconsin. But at age 4, I moved with my family to Mexico and then Brazil, returning to the United States in time for high school.

I once was a little girl who confused what language I ought to be speaking and with whom. I understood airports and airplanes as a way to visit my grandparents and extended family in the United States.

I often saw the world from the air over the wings of a jet. Things were so small down there.

To make sense of these confusing country and language changes, I began making art and writing at a very early age.

I once was a little girl that knew how to spend hours in my imagination—on a plane, in my house, and most often outside somewhere. I think this creature-person (painting below) came from these childhood imaginings. She's on top of the castle and there is a ladder into the sky allowing for even further immersion into the unknown.

Immersed in my own world, I also loved playing with snails and spiders, or cleaning and painting rocks before it became fashionable to do so. My first journal was pink with tiny white flowers on the glossy cover. I would sit outside to fill the pages with my most cherished thoughts. Always hoping no one would ever take a peek at my words and drawings. I sorta knew at an early age that I was "kinda different."

and...

I once was a little girl. Through creativity I have found the confidence to share my inner dialog and tender stories. Do you have a story of a time when you figured out how to feel like you are on top of the world or your own castle?
